Thailand Travel Information: Thai Food & Cuisines
Thai cuisine has become one of the world's most popular cuisines and highly regarded as culinary forms in the world. Influenced by Chinese and Indian cooking art, Thai cuisine has blended those arts and created the originality of its own. Thai food is considered scrupulous in cooking and delicate in dish decoration; carved fruits and vegetable is often used to embellish the dish, making it a graceful culinary art, not only for is taste but also its appearance.
Rice is the main staple of Thai people. Steamed or boiled rice (sticky rice in Northern and Northeastern Thailand) is the elemental plate of the meal and will be eaten with several dishes. Thai cuisine combines vegetable, fish, and other meat cooked with many kinds of spices such as garlic, chili, lemongrass, coconut milk, tamarind, ginger, coriander, basil, and peanuts. The taste of Thai food is usually hot and spicy. The most famous Thai dishes are Tom Yum Kung, the spicy soup with shrimp and Pad -Thai, noodle fried with meat and vegetable.
Thai cuisine has also a wide variety of desserts and snacks to choose from. Most of Thai desserts are made of sugar, egg, and coconut milk. Kanom Buang, batter folded over and filled with scraped coconut, egg yolk and green onion. Sang Kaya, custard made from coconut milk, sugar and eggs, usually eaten with sticky rice steamed with coconut milk. Visitors can find Thai desserts in most restaurants and also on the sidewalk. When it comes to fruits, Thailand is abounding with tropical fruits. A parade of different kinds of fruits can be seen all year round. Durian, rambutant, mangosteen, mango, banana, papaya are to name just a few.

Thailand, being an Asian crossroads for centuries, owes its rich culinary art to the cuisines of India, China, Malaysia and Indonesia. Some favorite Thai dishes are: Kai Ho Bai Toei (seasoned fried chicken in leaf wrappers); Thotman Plakrai or Thotman kung, Fish or shrimp fritters in Thai style; various kinds of yam (Thai salad); Tomyam (hot and sour soup); curry and namprik with fish vegetables. And perfect your Thai meal by ending it with Thai sweets, such as salim, thapthim krop, lotchunng, khanom chan, coconut-cream gelatine, thong yot, foi thong, etc.

Introduction to Pattaya

Although the beach here is not that great but you will not get bored walking down the long beach here because it is full with shops and people. A lot of times you will get people approaching you trying to sell something while you're trying to relax on the beach.
These vendors come hassling you trying to sell everything ranging from clothing to ornaments or just about anything that you can name. This happen a lot in Jomtien beach. Jomtien beach in Pattaya is probably the most famous beach. It attracts a lot of locals as well as foreigners or "Farang" as the Thai would call anyone with a Caucasian race.
Don't be surpise to find the Thais sitting under a big umbrella at the beach all day afraid of the sun. This is because they do not like sun tan and people with dark skin get are look down in the society. Let me tell you a bit more about the Thai people so you understand them a bit more.
The Thai people are very shy, most of them are probably at the beach or swiming in the sea with T-shirt on. It is far more common for Thai to swim in T-shirts than they do in bikinis. This doesn't mean that as a "Farang" you are not allowed to wear bikinis or swimming trunk. Definitely you can, nobody minds.
Pattaya has a famous reputation as one of the sex capital in Thailand or even Asia. Almost every where you go you will find prostitutes or agogo bars. Especially in South Pattaya, down walking street. I almost forgot to mention, be really careful who you hook up with! A lot of the pretty girls here are actually lady boy, you really have to be careful.
There are a lot of lady boy around Pattaya and it seems as if it is common in Thailand for lady boy. By Lady boy I mean, guys that have had their operation to turn their bodies to look more like women. Some of them have done a really good job.
Alright, you're probably wondering how to get around Pattaya. Its not hard, just get on one of the "Songtaews". Just flag down the Songtaew you see, hop in. Just press one of the buzzer when you want to get down. The fare is usually 5 - 20 baht depending on the distance. Sometime you may be ask to pay more but as of now this is the current fare.
This is a fare for the regular route, I mean with other people in the Songtaew as well. Now the fare will be different if you hire a Songtaew to go from specific place to another, this is where you really have to negotiate the fare. Don't let them over charge you. To avoid all of this, just get in the (regular route)Songtaew and see where it goes and just get off where you like or (specific point)discuss the fare first before you go anywhere.

Taking a motorcycle taxi is another option, the fare for this vary greatly. This is obviously a more expensive option incomparison with Songtaew. Again make sure you discuss the fare before you hop on one of them.

Accomodation - make sure you book early because it can be really competitive during a festival such as New year, or Songkran ( the water throwing festival also known as Thai new year on April 13th). For a guest house the price range is about 300 - 500 Baht for a night. For hotels the price range is normally 600 baht up depending on the location and season.
Booking are usual seldom but be better during festival. One of the best thing about hotels in Pattaya is that buffet breakfast are usually good and are at a competitive price. Some even offer a 80 baht buffet breakfast with bacon, bread, milk, coffee all you can eat. So make sure you do ask for the buffet breakfast.
Restaurants - Thailand is famous for its food. Pattaya offers a varierty of restaurants ranging from Indian to the original Thai food. Prices are not high but again if you're paying more than a 100 baht per plate then you're being over charged. Do try out the vendors on the foot path that sells noodle or rice, they are pretty cheap and nice. I'm not quite sure if it is clean but who cares. :P
Shopping - This is a one of the things that you will definitely be doing in Thailand. Not so much in Pattaya when compare to Bangkok, but nevertheless here's the picture of what all you can shop for.

The first miniaturized town in Southeast Asia, the Mini Siam, has been a popular tourist attraction since its operation started many years ago in Pattaya. Features models of more than 80 places in Thailand, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Crocodile Farm and daily crocodile and magic shows.
The Khao Khiew Zoo is an ‘open zoo’ where visitors can see over 50 species of indigenous Southeast Asia birds and animals co-existing in their natural habitat. The animals live in spacious, enclosures with minimal fencing and birds in large aviaries. The zoo is set in a hilly, serene woodland area.
The town of Si Racha is famous for its spicy chili dip and open-aired, seafront seafood restaurants. Situated on a little rocky islet a few kilometers from the mainland is Koh Loy (Floating Island), a Thai-Chinese Buddhist temple that was originally accessible only at low tide. Nowadays, a concrete paved bridge connects Koy Loy with the mainland and serves as a ferry pier.
Off the coast of Si Racha is the small island of Koh Sichang that formerly contained King Rama V’s favorite summer palace and used to be a customs checkpoint. Now it is a relatively quiet place with some architectural ruins and guesthouses.
On weekends and public holidays, the long stretch of Bang Saen Beach is a popular destination for Thais looking to unwind, play in the sun and surf, and picnicking on BBQ chicken, sticky rice and fresh coconut juice. Lots of water sports equipment for rent, i.e.jet skies, banana boats, lounge chairs, inflatable tubes.
The Marine Scientific Institute is located on the campus of Burapha University in Bang Saen, walking distance from the beach. Inside are living marine creatures, big and small, displayed in glass cases with descriptive signs educating the public about the diverse marine ecosystem. Highlight is feeding time at 14.00 hr daily when divers enter the large water tank to feed the large fishes, sharks, and stingrays.
People flock to Pattaya for the good, cheap accommodation, extensive beaches, excellent restaurants and excellent sports facilities in town. Jomtien Beach is more preferred for the daytime activities while Pattaya Beach comes to life after sunset. Or choose any of the nearby islands to relax or try a new water sport.
Pattaya is a great scuba diving training site for novice and refresher for expert divers. Most sites are within an hour boat ride. Year-round diving season with good visibility. Not too far out in Pattaya Bay is the popular Bremen Wreck, teeming with colorful coral fishes and nudibranches. The 300-foot boat lies upright in 25 meters of water off the naval town of Satthahip.
The Pattaya Elephant Village is the first and largest elephant training school in Pattaya. Watch the elephants demonstrate their forestry skills and perform tricks, such as play football. Arrange to go jungle trekking or choose to go on a raft journey across a lake.
Catch the elaborate productions and magnificent costumes of the transvestite cabaret shows in Pattaya. These 'girls' really love to perform and entertain. Be amazed with their beauty and regal finery. Shows are changed regularly and are packed nightly.

There are several excellent golf courses within 15 minutes taxi ride including the 27 hole Phoenix, and the excellent Pattaya Country Club (check for sport days which include a free lunch and a round for 15 dollars) Further south (30 mins) is the Navy course near Sattahip, this is beautiful and still cheap (18 holes for 25 dollars).

Travelling to Chon Buri
By Car
Chon Buri is a one-hour drive from Bangkok along Highway No. 34 (Bang Na-Trat). Alternatively, taking the Motor Way (new Bangkok-Chon Buri Route) will reduce travel time.
By Bus
The 1.5-hour journey from Bangkok can be made on regular buses originating from the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai). Air-conditioned buses leave Ekkamai every 40 minutes from 5.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tel: 0 2391 9829. Non air-conditioned buses leave Ekkamai every 30 minutes from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tel: 0 2391 2504.
There are also air-conditioned buses leaving the Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road from 6.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Call: 0 2936 2852-66 for more information. y carPattaya can be reached in a 2.5-hour drive along Bangna-Trat Highway via Bang Pakong, Chon Buri and Si Racha. However, visitors can avoid Chon Buri by opting for Highway 36, the new Chon Buri - Pattaya - Rayong route or taking the motorway from Rama 9 Road.

y busAir-conditioned and regular buses depart from the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and Bangkoks Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) on Kamphaengphet Road daily. Buses (air-con) depart the Eastern Bus Terminal every 30 minutes from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and from Mochit II (Northern Bus Terminal) from 5.00 a.m. to 7 p.m.

By train
The State Railway of Thailand offers a daily train service departing Bangkok's Hua Lamphong Station at 06.55 a.m., tel. 0 2621 8701. It takes about 5 hours to reach a station located near the Siam Country Club.
By Air
Bangkok Airways provides daily flights connecting Ko Samui and U-Taphao Airport. (Approximately 30 kilometers south of Pattaya).
Travelling in Pattaya
Pattaya City is divided into four major zones: North Pattaya, Central Pattaya, South Pattaya and Chomthian. It should be noted that there is a small mountain known as the Hill, located between South Pattaya and Chomthian. For a visual illustration take a look at the Map of Pattaya and Chomthian with the Hill.
Motorbikes are the most popular mode of transport in Pattaya. However, transportation in the city is facilitated through the use of special cars (song taew), customized pickup trucks with passenger seats in a covered overhead back cabin. These pickups, known as Bahts-Bus, can easily carry 8-10 passengers in the back, plus 1 or 2 passengers in front. They circle around the city and are allowed to stop anywhere. In addition to motorbike-taxis, the Bahts-Buses are the only form of public transport permitted in Pattaya. If not occupied, they also can be hired as private taxis. In fact, they are private vehicles in most cases belonging to the drivers. There are so many of them that they end up looking for passengers.
This compact city consists of 3 major roads that parallel each other. Right along the beach is Beach Rd., which is a one-way road from the north to south that is a few kilometers long. Second Rd. is a hundred or so meters away and carries city transport mainly from the south to north, although it is partly a two-way road. The last road is Sukhumvit Rd, a continuation of the highway leading to Bangkok. Many small streets called Soi(s) cross the roads. And it's advisable to walk some of the small streets, which are enumerated from north to south, although some have names. Second Rd. continues on to South Pattaya and turns to Chomthian reaching Chomthian beach within 5 minutes, and continues alongside Chomthian beach, which is approximately 20 kilometers long with some secluded escapes.
Chomthian Beach Rd., which is a two-way road, also parallels Sukhumvit Rd and is the only road in the Chomthian area, except for some connecting streets. On the other side of Sukhumvit road are several country clubs, golf courses and typical Thai rural villages, providing charming escapes on the banks of sweet-water lakes and small streams in the leisurely and relaxing countryside.
Many kinds of motorbikes, convertible monster Jeeps, sport and passenger cars are offered for rent. A driver's license is not required for driving around Pattaya and vicinity, so many tourists are tempted get behind the wheel. It should be noted that in Thailand drivers drive on the left lane, as in England and Japan.

Hat Chom
thianThe former paddy fields have turned into a thriving beach. Only 3 km. down Pattaya Beach, Chomthian is highly recommended to those who seek a quieter resort. The 6-kilometer long, largely straight beach is popular with windsurfers and watersports enthusiasts. It is also quieter and more relaxing than Pattaya Beach. Hotels and other accommodation facilities are available along the road that runs parallel to the shore.
Hat Pattaya
The half-moon-shaped Pattaya Beach is 4 kilometers long with a road running parallel to the beach. From the mid-section to the southern end of the area, there is a vast array of restaurants, bars, department stores, souvenir stores, as well as other places of entertainment. To the north of the beach are various mini-resorts and hotels in a quieter atmosphere.
It’s actually free to stroll along the beaches, but operators will charge you for the services they provide, i.e. the beach chair. A price is roughly $0.5 per chair, though bargaining is rather customary in Thailand.
Horseshoe Point Club
Located approximately 10 kilometers off of Sukhumvit Road, Horseshoe Point Club offers horse riding at all levels of proficiency, as well as dressage, cross-country jumping and polo. Tel: 0 3873 5050.
Khao Pattaya or Khao Phra Bat
This is a small hill to the south of Pattaya Beach. It is accessible by an asphalt road, which leads up to the hilltop. Khao Pattaya is now the site of the Naval Radio Station where the monument of Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak, the Father of Royal Thai Navy, is situated. A sacred Buddha image is also enshrined on the hilltop. The viewpoint on the hilltop offers a panoramic view of Pattaya City and Pattaya Bay.
Ko Khrok
Approximately 8 kilometers off of Pattaya Beach is Ko Khrok, an isle almost totally surrounded by rock formations. A gap of 100 meters to the east is a stretch of sandy beach where visitors can go and enjoy viewing underwater coral reefs. This island can be reached by chartered boat from South Pattaya. (As this is a private island, permission to enter must be obtained beforehand)
Ko Lan
Lying about 7.5 kilometers off of Pattaya by a 45-minute ferry or 15 minutes by speed boat ride, the island measures 2 kilometers by 5 kilometers and offers several white sandy beaches, notably Hat Ta Waen, Hat Laem Thian and Hat Thong Long, the latter facing coral reefs. Visitors can choose either snorkeling or viewing the coral from glass bottom boats. Ferries to the island leave South Pattaya pier daily from 10.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Cruises by sailing junks, with lunch provided are also available.
Ko Phai, Ko Manwichai, Ko Luam, Ko Klungbadan
Two hours or 23 kilometers from Pattaya are the Ko Phai Islands, the largest of which is Ko Phai. The other islands include Ko Manwichai, Ko Luam and Ko Klungbadan. The area is under the supervision of the Royal Thai Navy, however, visitors are allowed to stop by during the daytime for swimming, relaxation or diving. Overnight stays are not permitted.
Ko Sak
Located approximately six hundred meters further from Ko Lan, or about 10 kilometers from Pattaya is Ko Sak a small island shaped like an upturned horse-shoe. There are two connecting beaches to the north and south. Moreover, along the south shore are coral ranges. Ko Sak can be reached by chartered boat from South Pattaya.
Laser Trek
This place is part of Ripley's in the Royal Garden Plaza. Here players are dramatically engaged in a simulation of star wars. The excitement of the game lies in firing laser guns at rivals and set targets, with the objective being to make the highest scores as counted according to the number of targets hit.
Mini Siam
Located at Km. 143 on Highway No. 3 is a wonderland of miniature replicas of such outstanding architectural works as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Democracy Monument, the Bridge over the River Kwai, Prasat Hin Phimai, etc. Replicas of places of world significance are also displayed in the “miniworld” area. Paintball
Paintball ground is located on Thep Prasit Road, about 20 minutes drive from Pattaya city. Paintball is a game played in a model battlefield in an enclosed spacious area to create the atmosphere of a real fight. All players are provided with safety dresses and masks for protection from any bodily harm. Air guns filled with plastic shots driven by the pressure of carbon dioxide inside are used as weapons. A shot will burst into color water when hitting a victim. The players are divided into two teams, each trying to seize the flag of the other team and bringing it back safely to their base first. The game never fails to offer excitement.
Panarak Park
Panarak Park can be reached by proceeding 5 kilometers on Phonprapha Nimit Road off of Highway No. 3 at Km. 145. The park is a nature-based recreational facility with fishing gear for rent that is ideal for relaxation through fishing activities. Tel: 0 3824 9605-6.
Pattaya at Night
The variety of nighttime activities continuing until dawn is so diverse that every person would easily find diversions appealing to individual tastes and moods. Most likely any fantasy can be fulfilled, especially after sunset. After dark, the extension of Beach road in South Pattaya turns into a promenade (disallowed only for public transport), transformed into one of the hottest nightspot. A hunting ground beaming with neon lights and music, where fellow holiday-makers youths & aged alike, find an endless array of dining, shopping or entertainment establishments.
Worthy of notice is the disco in Pattaya. A disco is not just a dance palace, but more of a hi-tech extravaganza filled with flashing lights, trendy music, and fun loving crowds. Pattaya is famous for its incredible nightlife activities, and South Pattaya is the jewel in its crown outshining the rest with an incredible array of things to see and do. Pattaya Elephant Village
Located on Phonpraphanimit Road, which is off of Highway No.3 at Km. 145, the Pattaya Elephant Village showcases daily life of elephants and their masters. It also offers stage shows, which demonstrate how to catch wild elephants, elephants-at-work in the jungle, elephants playing football, a grand war, and elephants’ parades. Sanctuary of Truth (Prasat Satchatham)
The compound, which covers an area of more than two rais, is situated by the sea at Laem Ratchawet on Na Klua Road, North Pattaya. Within the compound is a gigantic temple-like structure entirely made of wood that is 105 meters high at the highest point which was constructed to withstand wind and sunshine on the seashore. With exquisite architectural features, the sanctuary was conceived out of the vision that human civilization has been achieved and nurtured by religious and philosophical truths.

Suan Chaloemphrakiat (Fitness Park)
Located at the foot of Pattaya hill on Phratamnak Road. Covering a large area, the place constructed to commemorate His Majesty the King’s sixtieth birthday on December 5, 1988. The gardens of the park boast a wide variety of flowering plants. There are also multipurpose grounds and winding trails for walking or jogging complete with standard exercise facilities. On any given day, a large number of people will relax, jog, exercise or simple enjoy the scenery of Pattaya in this park.
The Bhira International Circuit
The compound is located approximately 15 kilometers from Pattaya on the Pattaya-Rayong Road (Highway No. 36). The Bhira International Circuit periodically holds international motor and motorcycle races, while there are daily opportunities for speed enthusiasts to drive their own two or four-wheeled vehicles around the challenging track. The Bottle Museum
As the name implies, this is the place where you can find elaborate bottle creations, including the usual vessels. Located at Km. 145, off of Highway No. 3, the museum features the work of the Dutch master Peter Bedelais. The Million-Year Stone Park and Crocodile Farm
The Million-Year Stone Park and Crocodile Farm, which is located approximately 9 kilometers from Pattaya City, has beautifully landscaped grounds with elaborate flower and rock gardens. In addition, the farm has hundreds of crocodiles as well as some rare animals, including albino bears and horses. Getting there by car: Drive along Highway No. 3 (Sukhumvit) until you come to the Km. 140 marker near Sawangfah Temple, then turn into Chaiyaphonwithi (Route No.3024) and proceed for 5 kilometers.
The Monkey Training Centre
Located in Soi Chaiyaphruk, off of Highway No. 3 at Km. 151, the centre brings the best out of the monkeys. Visitors can admire the intelligence of monkeys, which are trained to harvest coconuts and to perform other various activities. Additional performances include cock fighting and a snake show. The Pattaya Park

The Ripley’s believe It or Not Odditorium
This is situated in the Royal Garden Plaza on Beach Road. The odditorium has a large collection of stories of oddities from every corner of the globe. Admission fee is 280 bahts for adults and 230 bahts for children.
The World Dog Centre
A little under 3 kilometers on Phonpraphanimit Road off Sukhumvit is a canine training facility. The World Dog Centre has more than 250 different species of dogs and stages daily shows by well-trained police dogs four times daily. Admission fee is 300 bahts for adults and 150 bahts for children. Underwater World Pattaya
A new tourist attraction in town is the largest and most modern ocean aquarium in Asia, boasting a 100-meter-long, 6.4-centimeter-thick acrylic pedestrian tunnel through an underwater environment filled with dozens of marine species.
Located just 200 meters south of Tesco Lotus in South Pattaya, the new theme park covers a total area of 12-rai and is housed in a structure similar to a large circus tent.
The aquarium itself houses more than 4,000 marine animals, comprising more than 200 different species from the region as well as some rare creatures from overseas. Top in the Visitors must-see list is the rare shovelnose ray, a hybrid between a shark and a stingray.

Pattaya First Time Visitors Advice
have just returned from PATTAYA and the experience was the most PHENOMINAL I have ever experienced. My name is Stuart Mills from Australia age 47.
My stay was one as would be treated as royalty by the people of this friendly environment.
I stayed only a very short time and during this period, I was given many insights in a very positive way to the people and the culture of this land.
With 3 inch mini skirts abounding in greatest of quantity, men will never be of the experience of loneliness among these most beautiful ladies that are simply put, MODELS and SUPER MODELS and are eager to treat a man as a man should be treated, as long as you respect the ladies and yourself, anything your desires can wish for with these ladies will be possible.
But please use common sense as they are looking for the most part, not all of them, but for the most part of them at you as a WALKING TELLER MACHINE so if you do fall in love, which will happen, then please be very careful at your choice of partner.
I have found that the more mature ladies will treat you not so much better but with more cultural caring, as they have been through the corridors of time and experiences and definitely know the ropes and because there is so much competition within the ladies then the more mature realise this and they are more willing to be with you in a relationship for you and not just your wallet, please, some of the younger ladies are of this quality as well, but for the most part if you find a lady about 28 to 35, then she will definitely know the ropes and know how to treat a man.
I say this with all respect to all the ladies of Pattaya. (yes they are ladies so treat them as such and they will treat you as a king. Disrespect them and believe me you will know the wroth of them)
A point to remember as well is to barter, with the ladies as this I have found is to be expected, and never come down more than half the price they initially ask
(The prices are cheap anyway and yes, they have to live as you and I do so please be fair when you do barter, these people are so poor so do not take advantage too much as this will offend them as it would offend you if you had a family to feed in this country and you were from this country.. simply put, be fair and they will recipricate in same.
DENTAL... Wow this is a beauty, Ii went to my dentist here in Australia in March 2006, (This year and enquired on dental work I required, simply in Australia for the same dental work $25,000) Screw in teeth needed (5 of them , $5000 each tooth)
Pattaya price only $ 3000 TOTAL for the same work done, so if you need any dental work done, and you can wait for your visit to the dentist then definitely wait as the savings are phenomenal.
$ 25,000 or $ 3000 ( hmmmm don't have to be a rocket scientist to work that one out.!)
OK food in Australia example ...T Bone steak salad and chips plus 2 scotch and coke, cost approx in Australia about $ 40 for this meal and beverage.
In Pattaya, approx ...$3 (YES I did say 3)
Once again rocket science is not my forte but hey I have been there so you decide!
If this is only your 1st trip then you will find you will have a magnificent time if you forget Western Culture, (took me about a week)
DO NOT wear or take expensive jewellery with you when you go out as this will only attract the POSSIBLE wrong type of person along your journey. Lock all valuables in the hotel safe and make sure they secure it in the safe within an envelope and get them to put tape over the seal and then sign the seal tape. It is simply a safety precaution for anywhere you wish to travel, even within your own country.
OK enough of all that.
Go enjoy, relax, do your own thing. So long as She or He is over 16, they do have laws there too and are very stringent and NO DRUGS, repeat "NO DRUGS AT ALL", check with your doctor before you leave your country of origin as you may be able to get a letter from your doctor for prescriptions only but even then they may be confiscated.
If you like the inside of prison instead of your hotel room or maybe even death for just a quarter of a matchbox of marijuana. Yes, death, bullet, not breathing then please do no blame anybody but yourself because you are the dickhead for taking illegal drugs into paradise.
Don't muck it up for your death. So declare every prescriptions at customs before you depart your country.
All aside from all the gory stuff and things you must be aware of you will find, the people and places of Thailand, Pattaya are there for your greatest pleasures to enjoy, so have a great time.

Pattaya History Information Guide
The Past
Pattaya's name was originated from the march of Phraya Tak (later known as King Taksin the Great) and his followers from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi just before the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom to the Burmese invaders in 1767.
When Phraya Tak's army arrived in the vicinity of what is Pattaya today, he encountered the troops of Nai Klom who tried to intercept him. When the two leaders met face to face, Nai Klom was awed by Phraya Tak's dignified manner and his army's strict discipline, thereby surrendering without a fight. The place where the two armies confronted each other was later called Thap Phraya, which means the Army of the Phraya. This was later changed to Phatthaya, which happens to mean the wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy season. Today the spelling of the name has been simplified to Pattaya.
For centuries, Pattaya was a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world. But a big change occurred on 29 April 1961 when the first group of about 100 American servicemen who would join the Vietnam War arrived in Pattaya for relaxation. Soon, sleepy Pattaya became Thailand's premier and most successful beach resort, which annually attracts hundreds of thousands of pleasure-seeking visitors. A full range of accommodations from super deluxe hotels to bungalows and mini-pocket guesthouses replaced fishermen's huts along the beach. Fishing vessels were adapted to become tourist boats and swimmers and sunbathers from various parts of the world frequented the quiet powdery golden beaches. Places of nighttime entertainment have also sprung up and are popular among international tourists.
The Present
Pattaya currently integrates the delights of a 1st class beach resort, city-like dining, shopping and night entertainment facilities with more than 300 assorted hotels, thousands of shops, restaurants and bars. In addition, there are an array of sports and recreational activities including beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, go-kart, gyms for working out, weight lifting and Thai-boxing gear. Pattaya Facts

Pattaya city is located on the eastern coast of the country at latitude 13? N and longitude 101? E in the area of Chon Buri province. Pattaya occupies an area of 208.1 sq. km. that is divided into 53.44 sq. kilometers of land and 154.66 sq. kilometers of islands and sea. Its coastline is 15 kilometers long.
Pattaya has a plain on the coast with some high mountains to the south. The area on the east slopes down towards the sea on the west.
Administration
Pattaya City has been administered under a special autonomous system since 1978. It has a status comparable to that of a municipality and is administered separately by the mayor of Pattaya City, who is responsible for making policies, organizing public services, and supervising all employees of Pattaya City Administration.

Not that Pattaya lacks in attractions. It has good beaches, though the actual Pattaya beach is not the cleanest anymore, others are pristine and the water crystal clear. Beach related activities are extensive and you are sure to find something to suit you.
Pattaya is located within easy reach from the Bangkok as well as Don Muang International Airport. It has an excellent accommodation infrastructure, which are of international standard and restaurants and entertainment for all tastes. Because of its good accessibility from Bangkok, Pattaya remains one of Thailand's most important and popular dive centers.
Climate
Thailand has a tropical climate with three seasons: Hot (March-May), Rainy (June-October) and Cool (November-February). It is hot all year round, there is little difference between the hottest and coolest months, and average temperatures are around 27°c.
The months with the most rain are July, August and September. Pattaya's coastal location means more breezes than say Bangkok and the rain tends to come in short and heavy bursts rather than prolonged over days, but no matter when you come, you'll have a good time. Lightweight casual clothing is recommended.
